First up is This City is Ours, an eight-part drama from BBC One that takes us deep inside the dangerous world of a powerful crime family based in Liverpool with Sean Bean playing the lead role of the ruthless family patriarch.
On Paramount+, MobLand hits screens. Heavy hitters Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan, and Helen Mirren star in this series about a British crime family in London.
If true crime is more your speed, Happy Face on Paramount+ is a must-watch. Based on the real-life story of Melissa Jesperson-Moore, who at age 15 discovered that her father was the notorious serial killer known as the Happy Face Killer. The series stars Dennis Quaid and Annaleigh Ashford.
Over on Amazon Prime, Fear delivers a psychological thriller led by Martin Compston and Anjli Mohindra. The pair star as a couple who move into their dream home in Glasgow with their children, only to discover that their neighbour is not what he first seemed.
Finally, for those who love a mix of mystery, humour, and suspense, The Residence on Netflix is one to watch. This new Shondaland detective drama features Uzo Aduba as an eccentric investigator who is called to the White House to solve a murder that took place during a state dinner. Described as funny, clever, and suspenseful, this series promises to offer a unique take on the classic whodunit, set against the backdrop of one of the most famous buildings in the world.

Long Bright River – Peacock – 13 March
A Philadelphia police officer probes a series of murders and searches for her sister, an addict who has gone missing in this gritty police procedural based on the best-selling book by Liz Moore. Co-creator Nikki Toscano says we will see Amanda Seyfried “like you’ve never seen her before — flawed and raw, tarred by guilt and shame and legacy”. Also starring Nicholas Pinnock as her former partner and Dash Mihok (who was Brendan “Bunchy Donovan” in Ray Donovan) as her new partner, Eddie Lafferty. So much going on back-story wise for all the characters in this brilliant series. Put it on your must-watch list.

BBC synopsis of Series 5: West Midlands Police and forensic teams attending the scene of a brutal stabbing in a brothel turn to a trail left in blood in a bid to track the killer. On arrival at the property, the police find a Chinese national who has been subjected to multiple stabbings, and despite some signs of resistance, died at the hands of a merciless killer. They quickly deduce that the scene is a brothel and that the caller who witnessed the attack may be linked to trafficking by a criminal gang, which places her at increased risk.

This new Welsh detective drama stars Elen Rhys (The Mallorca Files, Craith/Hidden) as DI Ffion Lloyd, who teams up with her former lover, DS Rick Sheldon (Richard Harrington, Y Gwyll/Hinterland), to investigate the murder of a nurse in a Welsh seaside town, raising the horrifying prospect of a copycat killer and reuniting two former lovers tasked with finding the killer. The Welsh language version was Cleddau, which came out last year. We now get the English version!

The sixth series of the hit cold case drama premiered on ITV1 (and STV in Scotland) on 9 February, with all episodes of the season available to stream on ITVX as a boxset on the same day. Jessie and Sunny, both experiencing strains at home, delve into the discovery of a body dumped in the marsh — apparently dismembered. The synopsis reveals: “As the investigation unfolds, viewers are introduced to a diverse new cast of characters.’’

The Vanishings – Channel 5 – 6 Feb
Irish crime drama The Vanishings stars India Mullen and Downton Abbey’s Allen Leech. Filmed in Dublin’s Blackrock it’s based on the cases of women who vanished in the 1990s in Ireland. Dubliner Leech plays Detective David Burke, while Mullen stars as reporter Lisa Wallace. Desperate to stop the closing of a women’s shelter, Wallace publishes an article linking her own experience with violence against women – her mother’s murder. As the reactions to the article flow in, so does a letter from her mother’s killer, hinting at the kidnapping of another woman.

A Stockholm detective under internal investigation heads to a ski resort to unwind, until a young girl’s disappearance compels her back to work. The series that takes place in the beautiful, snowy town of Åre (pronounced Ura) in Sweden and its two parts are based on two books by Swedish author Viveca Sten, “Hidden in Snow” and “Hidden in the Shadows’’.
